Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Political education plays a significant role in fostering grassroots development by informing citizens about their rights, responsibilities, and the mechanisms of governance. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, community-based organizations (CBOs) have been at the forefront of political education initiatives, aiming to empower local populations and promote active participation in democratic processes (Adeyemi & Bature, 2023; Ndagi et al., 2024). These organizations conduct workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns to educate citizens on various aspects of politics, including electoral processes, government accountability, and civil rights. Political education, especially at the grassroots level, has the potential to enhance citizens’ understanding of the political system and encourage civic engagement. Despite the importance of political education, its direct impact on grassroots development in Makurdi LGA has not been extensively studied. This research seeks to explore the relationship between political education and grassroots development in Makurdi, with a specific focus on the role of community-based organizations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While political education is a critical tool for fostering democracy and civic participation, the extent to which it contributes to grassroots development in Makurdi LGA remains unclear. Despite the efforts of CBOs, challenges such as limited resources, low literacy rates, and political apathy hinder the effectiveness of political education programs (Ibrahim & Mohammed, 2023; Abubakar et al., 2024). Furthermore, there is insufficient empirical research on the specific outcomes of political education on local governance, community empowerment, and socio-economic development. This study aims to examine the role of political education provided by CBOs in promoting grassroots development in Makurdi LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of political education in fostering grassroots development in Makurdi LGA.
  2. To evaluate the impact of community-based organizations in promoting political education and civic engagement in Makurdi LGA.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by CBOs in delivering political education and propose strategies to enhance their effectiveness.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does political education contribute to grassroots development in Makurdi LGA?
  2. What is the role of community-based organizations in promoting political education in Makurdi LGA?
  3. What challenges do community-based organizations face in providing political education, and how can they be addressed to improve grassroots development?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Political education significantly contributes to grassroots development in Makurdi LGA.
  2. Community-based organizations play a significant role in promoting political education and civic engagement in Makurdi LGA.
  3. Addressing the challenges faced by community-based organizations will enhance the impact of political education on grassroots development in Makurdi LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in that it provides insights into the role of political education in driving grassroots development. The research will highlight the effectiveness of community-based organizations in fostering civic engagement and empowering local populations. The findings will inform policymakers, NGOs, and local government authorities about the importance of supporting political education initiatives as part of broader development strategies. Additionally, the study will contribute to the existing literature on civic education and grassroots political development in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Makurdi LGA in Benue State and examines the role of political education in grassroots development, with a focus on community-based organizations. It does not extend to other LGAs or broader state-level political education initiatives.
